Snow adventures in Mount Rainier National Park

travel writer

All the cold rain in the city this time of year means big snow for the mountains. I checked out Crystal Mountain Resort for the first time last week. The big ski area boasts almost 500 inches of snowfall (!) each year, and this year is off to a great start for anyone who wants to hit the powder. My car was buried under a foot and a half of snow in the short 24 hours I was at the mountain.

Hit up some snowshoe trails and checked out the ski runs. Despite lots of fog and constant buckets of snow, the scenery was outstanding and it made for a great overnight trip. I was initiated into the Snow Chain club, too–first time putting them on, and despite some early frustration with the lingo-laden instructions, it wasn’t too hard to get the tires on my Prius chained up. I felt much more comfortable driving downhill with the chains and got home safely.

I recommend a visit here, even if you’re not a ski bum. You can snowshoe on your own or with a guide, or just have a beer or hot chocolate and watch the skiers fly down the runs.
